From Doha to Art Basel Hong Kong… Al-Sadu takes the global art stage through the work of Catherine Karam

In a remarkable artistic achievement, Qatari Al-Sadu makes its presence felt on one of the world’s most important art platforms through the works of Lebanese artist *Catherine Karam, who is based in Doha, as part of the events of **Art Basel Hong Kong, during **Hong Kong Art Week*.

On the occasion of Hong Kong Art Week, *Artbridger* presents its group exhibition *“What Takes Shape”, curated by **Randa Sadaka, on March 20, 2026. The exhibition features a selection of distinguished artists, with Karam presenting works inspired by Gulf heritage—particularly the traditional art of *Al-Sadu—through a contemporary vision that begins in *Doha* and reaches a global audience.

### Al-Sadu… From Qatari Memory to Global Platforms

The significance of this participation is heightened locally by the spotlight it places on the use of Al-Sadu, one of the most prominent symbols of heritage in *Qatar* and the Gulf region, as a central element in Karam’s new series *“Fields of Awakening.”*

Al-Sadu is a traditional weaving art closely associated with Bedouin life. Practiced by women on hand-operated looms, its geometric patterns carry deep meanings related to identity, collective memory, and community strength.

In her works, Karam reinterprets this heritage through her artistic journey, which has evolved since she moved to Doha in 2012. In 2023, she founded the *Conscious Walls* project and dedicated her practice to what she calls “conscious art.” The Sadu-inspired patterns in her paintings transform into visual pathways that guide viewers through themes of rupture, renewal, and awakening—creating a contemporary dialogue between heritage and spirit.

### Doha as the Starting Point

Karam’s participation—while she continues to create from *Doha—also highlights the growing role of the city as a hub for contemporary art and a source of inspiration rooted in local identity yet open to the world. The presence of works inspired by *Al-Sadu within the VIP tours of *Art Basel Hong Kong* reflects how elements of Qatari heritage are reaching a distinguished international audience through a platform considered a bridge between East and West and a major center for contemporary art in Asia.

### A Visual Presence that Blends Heritage and Abstraction

The works in *“Fields of Awakening”* are composed using mixed media on linen. Layers of acrylic, charcoal, ink, and graphite intersect across translucent, unframed spaces, while Al-Sadu appears either as drawn patterns or as actual woven threads integrated into the canvas.

This interaction between color, texture, and pattern gives the works a tactile dimension that reinterprets heritage through a universal abstract language.

This participation represents a pivotal milestone in the artist’s career. It affirms the ability of an artistic experience rooted in *Qatar* to be present at major international events, and it reinforces the presence of Al-Sadu not merely as a traditional craft but as a visual element capable of speaking to the world from within the contemporary art scene.
